Starbucks Inclusivity

Starbucks has made their foundation for inclusive spaces available as open-source.

Starbucks said in February 2024 that it intends to increase accessibility and diversity across all of its locations in the United States. Through the implementation of its Inclusive Spaces Framework, Starbucks intends to reimagine the retail experience for all individuals, regardless of the accessibility requirements they may have. The framework was introduced with the opening of a flagship store in Washington, District of Columbia.

This store boasts a variety of features that are designed to make navigation and interaction easier for all customers and staff. These features include an order status board that provides visual confirmation of orders, acoustic dampening that reduces echoes for individuals who use assisted listening devices, and a handoff counter that has an overhanging shelf and plenty of clearance underneath for customers who use wheelchairs, strollers, or service dogs. The Inclusive Spaces Framework was designed by a collaborative effort involving customers, staff, and accessibility specialists respectively. Developing scalable solutions that are capable of being implemented in all newly opened and remodeled company-owned stores was the objective of this project. Additionally, Starbucks plans to make the framework open-source, which will make it possible for the retail industry as a whole to adopt it and carry out additional development processes.
