π‘ Case Studies Transforming the Sector
Educational Gaming
Platforms like Venture Valley are utilizing gamification to teach financial literacy and entrepreneurship, engaging young learners in a dynamic and interactive way.
The WWF and Google Arts & Culture started Rewild the World on March 22, 2024, which was World Wildlife Day. It was a teaching project about four endangered species and their habitats: tigers, gorillas, polar bears, and sea turtles. Using Google's MediaPipe machine-learning technology, the interactive game lets players see the world through the eyes of the species and fix up its environment with simple hand movements. This project is part of a larger effort to use technology for conservation, in an effort to stop the shocking 69% drop in wildlife numbers since 1970.
Nature-Based Solutions
UNHCR's initiative to plant lemongrass and neem trees in refugee settlements to prevent malaria demonstrates the integration of environmental and health solutions in humanitarian aid.
The Ugandan refugee village of Palorinya is built on a floodplain that floods every so often and has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. To help stop malaria better in 2023, the UNHCR's Innovation Service used a natural answer. By using lemongrass and neem trees, which naturally keep mosquitoes away, the effort fights the higher risk of malaria caused by seasonal flooding and lessens the damage caused by flooding by planting new plants. Along with 348,390 lemongrass cuttings, 86,000 neem trees had been planted by December 2024. In the end, the program will help about 35,000 families.
Open-Source AI Models
Cohere for AI's Aya, an open-source AI model, is setting new standards in language understanding and translation, significantly benefiting multilingual communication in the nonprofit sector.
Aya is an open-source, multilingual-generating LLM that was made by Cohere For AI (C4AI). It supports 101 languages. It claims to set new standards for understanding, summarizing, and translating languages across a wide range of topics. In benchmark tests, it did much better than other models. C4AI released the Aya Collection along with the launch of Aya in February 2024. It is the biggest multilingual instruction fine-tuned dataset, with 513 million prompts and completions in 114 languages. This includes the Aya Dataset, which has about 204,000 prompts chosen and marked up by people who speak 67 different languages. The AI study lab at the US-based Cohere is called Cohere For AI.
AI-Driven Cancer Support
The Gallery of Hope's use of AI to create future snapshots for people with metastatic breast cancer represents a pioneering approach to using technology for emotional and psychological support in healthcare.
Breast Cancer Now, the biggest breast cancer charity in the UK, asked famous photographer Jillian Edelstein to draw what the future will be like for people with advanced breast cancer that can't be cured. The Gallery of Hope show, which took place at London's Saatchi Gallery in March 2024 and can be seen online, included a collection of photos made with the help of people who have been diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer, which is also called secondary breast cancer. Edelstein used generative AI to take pictures of moments from the future that the people he showed hope to have, like seeing their son get married or holding their first grandchild.
Eco-Friendly Consumer Choices
The Coral Bouquet initiative by Tourism Fiji, where couples adopt baby corals instead of gifting flowers, highlights a shift towards environmentally conscious gifting options.
The NGO Coral Gardeners and Tourism Fiji worked together to bring the Coral Bouquet to the world on Valentine's Day 2024. Traditional flower bouquets release a lot of carbon into the air, mostly because of the travel. Instead of flowers, partners were asked to adopt baby corals that would be grown and planted in their honor. For USD 25, people could buy a Coral Bouquet, add a unique message, and get a file with a card they could download and send to their loved ones. All the money made from the project went to help restore coral reefs in Fiji.
