Utilizing digital twin technology, climate change monitoring is made possible.
In June of 2024, the European Commission formally opened Destination Earth (DestinE) at the EuroHPC LUMI supercomputing center in Finland. Destination Earth is intended to improve understanding of climate change and extreme weather events. DestinE is able to provide high-resolution digital twins of the planet by utilizing the LUMI supercomputer to correctly simulate various climate and weather situations. Over one hundred partners from all over Europe are contributing to the success of the project. Among the most important stakeholders are the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT).
