Jars printed with thermochromic ink that allow users to see whether or not their refrigerator is appropriately cool.
Hellmann's conducted a series of tests on new labels for its jars of mayonnaise during Food Waste Action Week, which took place in March 2023. Indicating whether or not a refrigerator is cool enough to maintain the freshness of food, the labels are printed with thermochromic ink, which takes on a different hue depending on the temperature. In order to raise awareness about the issue of food waste, prototype jars were distributed to Hellmann's supporters, food waste campaigners, and influential people in the United Kingdom. In addition to a hidden layer that is only visible below 5 degrees Celsius, the labels have a vibrant design that was created by illustrator Ellen Porteus. Some goods can be stored for up to three days longer in a refrigerator that is set to a temperature of below 5 degrees Celsius (as opposed to 7 degrees Celsius). The typical refrigerator in the United Kingdom is set at least two degrees Celsius higher than it should be, according to the climate action organization WRAP.
