During daily walks, pet-owner teams keep an eye on the safety of the area.
Teams of dogs and their owners are appointed to look for and report any potential safety threats to authorities when they are out on walks in their neighborhood as part of the Seoul Dog Patrol Program, which is a citizen initiative that is entirely volunteer. Dog owners who would like to participate in the program are need to go through a screening process, which is then followed by training on safety procedures and what to look out for during patrols. Only 64 teams participated in the project when it was first launched in 2022. It was organized by the Seoul Metropolitan Government. The program expanded to more than 1,000 teams in 2023, during which time they carried out more than 48,000 patrol actions and reported more than 2,600 neighborhood safety hazards. These risks included things like damaged facilities or individuals who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. More than 1,400 teams participated in the 2024 program when it began in May of that year. During the current year, the objective is to increase the number of teams to 2,000 and concentrate on preventing criminal activity, ensuring the safety of women who return home late at night, and promoting responsible pet ownership.
