Read Your Way Out, Philippines, Prison, City Jail, Tagalog, City Jail

UNODC

Reading program launched in response to the problem of overpopulation in prisons.

A program called Read Your Way Out has been implemented in the Philippines, which enables inmates to lessen the length of their sentences by reading regularly. Inmates have the opportunity to receive a 15-day sentence reduction for every sixty hours of reading that they complete each month. While simultaneously boosting literacy, the initiative will be tested out in April 2024 at the Iligan City Jail, which is now experiencing a significant amount of overcrowding. There are books available in both English and Tagalog at the jail library. These books cover a wide range of topics, from fiction to self-help. It is the first project of its sort in Asia, and it is generating attention among countries that are located in close proximity to it. The initiative was launched with cooperation from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
