Controversy surrounds Microsoft's carbon capture collaboration.

A partnership between Microsoft and Ørsted, a Danish energy firm, was established in May 2023 with the objective of capturing 2.76 million metric tons of carbon dioxide over a period of 11 years. In addition to assisting Microsoft in reaching its goal of becoming carbon neutral by the year 2030, the agreement also makes it possible for Ørsted to adopt carbon capture technology in two biomass-burning power plants located in Asnaes and Copenhagen. However, burning biomass, such as wood chips, still results in the release of more carbon and the destruction of habitat, which makes it a contentious option in comparison to other renewable energy options or the reduction of overall carbon emissions.
