Telco is converting street cabinets into electric vehicle chargers.

BT Group, a supplier of telecommunications services in the United Kingdom, launched a trial project in January 2024 to convert utility boxes, often known as street cabinets, that were nearing the end of their useful lives into electric vehicle chargers. Traditionally, the utility boxes are used to hold broadband and phone cabling; however, as part of the trial program, these boxes will be upgraded with a technology that will enable energy to be shared through a charging point. As a solution to the shortage of electric vehicle charging stations in the United Kingdom, BT Group suggests that up to 60,000 street cabinets might be reused in this manner.
